History of Pilot Butte

Pilot Butte was formed by volcanic activity about 190,000 years ago, Pilot Butte is an extinct cinder cone that erupted during a period of intense volcanic activity in the region. Its iconic shape, visible from miles around, was created as gas-charged lava exploded, throwing fragments into the air that piled up around the vent. This dramatic history makes it one of Bend’s most recognizable features.

Named “Pilot Butte” because it served as a navigational landmark for early travelers, trappers, and settlers, this cinder cone guided pioneers across Central Oregon’s high desert landscape. Its visibility from great distances helped early travelers orient themselves in what was then a largely undeveloped wilderness.

In the early 1900s, as Bend started to grow, Pilot Butte became a recreational area. By 1928, it was designated a state park, and since then, it has been maintained as a place where locals and visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty and history of the region.

Pilot Butte’s history as both a geological wonder and a practical landmark gives it a unique place in Central Oregon’s story. It remains a favorite spot for outdoor activities and sunset viewing, combining a sense of natural history with Bend’s adventurous spirit.
